Giannis Maniatis (Greek: Γιάννης Μανιάτης; born 12 October 1986) is a Greek former professional footballer. He played as a right back or a defensive midfielder. He was known for his strong tackling, great energy, and good passing skills.

Giannis Maniatis: A Football Journey
Early Career and Panionios
Giannis Maniatis started his football journey at a young age. He was first noticed playing for A.A. Arachova Parnassos when he was 16. He then played for AO Thiva in his youth career.
In late 2003, Panionios signed him. He made his first team debut in 2004. By 2006–07, he was a key player, helping Panionios finish fifth in the league. This allowed them to play in European competitions. He even helped them reach the group stage of the UEFA Cup. Maniatis scored his first goal in the Super League in October 2008. He stayed a vital part of the team for several years.
Many big Greek clubs, like AEK Athens, Olympiacos, and Panathinaikos, were interested in him. However, in June 2009, Maniatis decided to stay. He signed a new four-year contract with Panionios.
Life at Olympiacos
In January 2011, Olympiacos signed Maniatis. He was first brought in as a right-back. But he soon found his true calling as a defensive midfielder. His coach, Ernesto Valverde, played him in this new role. Maniatis played very well, especially in a tough UEFA Champions League game against Marseille. He became a key player in midfield for Olympiacos. He showed great tackling, amazing stamina, and good passing.
Maniatis once shared how far he had come. He said, "I used to play in front of 10 people in the village of Arahova and a few years later I played in front of 40.000 fans in the Karaiskakis stadium." This shows his dedication and hard work.
Important Moments at Olympiacos
He scored his first goal for Olympiacos in a 4–0 win against Levadiakos. In December 2012, he scored his first UEFA Champions League goal. This was in a 2–1 home win against Arsenal.
Maniatis was a very important player for Olympiacos. In 2014, he signed a new four-year contract. This kept him at the club until 2017. He said he was proud to play for Olympiacos. He felt it was like a family. He promised to give his all to help the team win titles.
Injuries and Challenges
In 2015, Maniatis faced a big challenge. He injured his knee during a Greek Cup game. This injury kept him out of action for about six months. Despite this, he extended his contract with Olympiacos until 2019. This showed his strong desire to stay with the club.
After a long recovery, Maniatis returned to play in January 2016. He even scored a goal in his first game back. However, the new coach, Paulo Bento, had different plans. Maniatis was not playing as much. In September 2016, he was not included in the UEFA Europa League squad. After a difficult period, he and Olympiacos agreed to end his contract in February 2017.
Loan to Standard Liège
In February 2016, Maniatis joined Standard Liège in Belgium on loan. This was for six months. Olympiacos set a fee if Standard Liège wanted to buy him permanently. He made his debut in the Belgian Pro League on February 7, 2016. He scored his first goal for the club in April 2016.
Time at Atromitos
After leaving Olympiacos, Maniatis signed with Atromitos in February 2017. He joined them on a free transfer for the rest of the season. However, he did not continue his career at Atromitos after that season.
Playing for Alanyaspor
In June 2017, Maniatis moved to Turkey. He signed a two-year contract with Süper Lig club Alanyaspor. He was happy to join the team. He said he would do his best to help Alanyaspor reach its goals. He even reunited with his Greek national team friend, Georgios Tzavellas, at the club.
In early 2018, Maniatis suffered another injury. This kept him from playing for a while. But he returned to the team in April 2018. In September 2018, he scored his first goal for Alanyaspor. This helped his team win 1–0.
Back to Panionios
In February 2019, Giannis Maniatis returned to his old club, Panionios. He signed a contract after leaving Alanyaspor. In June 2019, he renewed his contract with Panionios until 2021. However, in November 2019, his contract was ended by agreement. This was after a difficult season for him.
Playing for Greece
Maniatis's great performances for Panionios led to him being called up to the national team. He made his debut for Greece in August 2010. This was in a friendly match against Serbia. He played in all four games for Greece in the UEFA Euro 2012 tournament.
His excellent season with Olympiacos helped him get selected for the 2014 FIFA World Cup squad. During the World Cup, he had a disagreement with a teammate during training. However, they talked it out and continued to focus on the team's goals.
First International Goal
Maniatis scored his first goal for Greece on June 7, 2016. It was a spectacular long-range shot against Australia. Greece won that game 2–1.
