Discovering Gibbon, Washington

Gibbon is a small community in the state of Washington. It's a place where people live, but it's not officially a city or town with its own mayor and city council. Instead, it's part of the larger Benton County.

A Brief History

Gibbon has an interesting past, especially because of its connection to railroads.

How Gibbon Started

The community of Gibbon began in 1884. It was first called Bender. The Northern Pacific Railway Company created it. This company built railroads across the country. Bender was mainly a railroad junction. This means it was a very important spot where different train tracks met or crossed. It was a busy place for trains to switch directions or connect to other lines.

A Name Change

In April 1896, the name of Bender was changed. It became Gibbon. This new name honored a famous person: U.S. Army General John Gibbon. He was a brave general who had just passed away that same year.
