History of Gibson
Gibson started out in a different area called Richmond County, North Carolina. The town got its name from Noah Gibson, who was the first postmaster in the area. A post office was built there in 1846.
The Railroad Arrives
In 1883, the Raleigh and Augusta Air Line Railroad decided to build a special track, called a spur line, to Gibson. This track would help bring goods into the town. It would also help local farmers ship their cotton to markets.
People in Gibson got ready for the railroad. They built a train station (depot), a hotel, a school (academy), and more stores. The spur line opened in 1884, and trains started running daily to Hamlet.
Later, in 1891, another train line connected to the Gibson depot. This was the Charleston, Sumter and Northern Railroad from Bennettsville, South Carolina.
Becoming a Town
In 1899, Scotland County was created. Gibson became part of this new county. That same year, Gibson officially became an incorporated town. This means it got its own local government.
Over the years, Gibson continued to grow. A bank was opened in 1904. A community club, called a civic ruritan club, was started in 1946. The old train station was later fixed up and now serves as a community center for everyone to use.
