Giessenlanden (Dutch: [ˈɣisə(n)ˌlɑndə(n)]) was a municipality in the western part of the Netherlands. It was located in the province of South Holland.

This area covered about 65.11 km2 (25.14 sq mi) of land and water. A small part, 1.54 km2 (0.59 sq mi), was water. In 2014, about 14,476 people lived there.

Giessenlanden included several smaller communities. These were Arkel, Giessen-Oudekerk, Giessenburg, Hoogblokland, Hoornaar, Noordeloos, and Schelluinen.

On January 1, 2019, Giessenlanden joined with another municipality called Molenwaard. Together, they formed a new, larger municipality known as Molenlanden.

Geography of Giessenlanden

Giessenlanden was located in a flat, low-lying area. Much of the land in the Netherlands is below sea level, and Giessenlanden was no exception. It was about 1 meter (3 feet) below sea level.

The region is known for its beautiful Dutch landscapes. You can find many canals, rivers, and green pastures here. This area is part of the Alblasserwaard, a historic polder landscape.

Getting Around Giessenlanden

Even though Giessenlanden was a rural area, it had public transportation.

Train Station

The Arkel railway station was located within the municipality. This station is on the Elst–Dordrecht railway line. It allowed people to travel by train to other towns and cities.
