What's the Story About?
The story begins just before Berk's traditional winter holiday, Snoggletog. All the dragons living in Berk suddenly leave. This makes everyone very sad. Only Toothless stays behind, because he cannot fly by himself.
Hiccup feels bad for Toothless. He builds Toothless a new automatic tail. This tail lets Toothless fly on his own, giving him freedom. After getting his new tail, Toothless also flies away.
The Dragons' Secret Island
Three days later, Fishlegs' dragon, Meatlug, escapes. Fishlegs had secretly kept Meatlug chained up. Meatlug accidentally takes Hiccup along for the ride. Meatlug flies to a secret island with warm hot springs.
It turns out all the dragons (except Toothless) have gone to this island. They are there to hatch their eggs! Meanwhile, back on Berk, Astrid and the other young Vikings find dragon eggs in Meatlug's nest.
Explosive Eggs and a Big Surprise
They decide to scatter the eggs around Berk. They hope this will cheer up the villagers. But their plan goes wrong! Dragon eggs hatch with a loud bang, usually underwater. This causes a lot of damage to Berk during the hatching process.
On the dragons' island, Hiccup meets Stormfly (Astrid's dragon) and Hookfang (Snotlout's dragon). They both have new baby dragons. When Hiccup asks for a ride home, he accidentally causes all the dragons to start flying back to Berk.
Hiccup quickly decides to use a nearby wrecked ship. He uses it to carry the baby dragons. The babies cannot fly yet, so they need a ride back to Berk.
A Heartfelt Reunion
The people of Berk are very happy when their dragons return. They are also excited about all the new baby dragons. But Hiccup is still sad because Toothless has not come back.
During the Snoggletog celebration, Toothless finally returns! He brings Hiccup's lost helmet, which Hiccup had dropped into the sea earlier. Hiccup and Toothless have a very happy reunion.
The next day, Toothless breaks his new automatic tail. He wants Hiccup to put his old tailfin back on. Toothless wants Hiccup to fly with him by controlling his fin. By doing this, Toothless gives Hiccup an even better gift: his friendship and companionship.
