Jonathan Adam Saunders Baruchel (born April 9, 1982) is a Canadian actor and director. He is widely known for his voice role as Hiccup Haddock in the popular How to Train Your Dragon movies and TV shows. He also played main characters in comedies like Fanboys (2009), She's Out of My League (2010), and This Is the End (2013).
Jay Baruchel was also a co-star in the Disney action-fantasy movie The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010). His movies have earned a lot of money around the world. He has also had important roles in other comedies such as Knocked Up (2007), Tropic Thunder (2008), and Goon (2011).
On television, he played Steven Karp in the comedy series Undeclared (2001–2002) and Josh Greenberg in Man Seeking Woman (2015–2017). Both shows were liked by critics. Baruchel also played BlackBerry co-founder Mike Lazaridis in the film BlackBerry (2023). He has directed films like Goon: Last of the Enforcers (2017) and Random Acts of Violence (2019), in which he also acted.

Early Life and Beginnings
Jay Baruchel was born in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. His mother, Robyne, is a writer, and his father, Serge, sells antiques. He grew up in the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce area of Montréal, Quebec. He has a younger sister. His father was born in Paris, France. Jay Baruchel has Irish, French, and Jewish family roots. He believes his Irish family comes from County Mayo.
Acting Career Highlights
Jay Baruchel started acting when he was just 12 years old. One of his first big roles was in the TV series My Hometown in 1996. From 1997 to 1998, he co-hosted Popular Mechanics for Kids with Elisha Cuthbert, a show about science and technology.
After a small part in the Cameron Crowe film Almost Famous, Baruchel got the role of Steven Karp in Judd Apatow's TV series Undeclared. In this show, he worked with actors like Seth Rogen and Charlie Hunnam. He then appeared with James Van Der Beek in The Rules of Attraction.
In 2004, Baruchel played a young boxer named Danger Barch in Clint Eastwood's movie Million Dollar Baby. He also starred in Nemesis Game and Fetching Cody. Later, he appeared on the TV shows Just Legal and Numb3rs.
Comedy Roles and Voice Acting
Baruchel appeared in several comedy films, including Knocked Up (where he reunited with Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen), I'm Reed Fish, and Just Buried. He also acted in the Ben Stiller-directed movie Tropic Thunder with Jack Black and Robert Downey Jr..
In 2007, he co-starred with Seth Rogen in a short film called Jay and Seth versus the Apocalypse. This short film helped them get funding for a bigger movie, which later became the hit comedy This Is the End in 2013. In 2008, he was in Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist and had a small part in Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian.

In 2014, Baruchel appeared in the RoboCop remake and voiced Hiccup again in How to Train Your Dragon 2. From 2015 to 2017, he starred in the FXX comedy series Man Seeking Woman.
Jay Baruchel also wrote, directed, and starred in the 2017 sports comedy film Goon: Last of the Enforcers, which is a sequel to the 2011 movie Goon. In 2018, he released his first book, Born Into It: A Fan's Life. The book shares his deep love for the Montreal Canadiens hockey team.
After the final How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World movie in 2019, Baruchel starred in the Danish film The Kindness of Strangers. He also directed and starred in the Canadian horror film Random Acts of Violence that same year.
In 2022, Baruchel hosted the Crave series We're All Gonna Die (Even Jay Baruchel). This six-episode show looked at different ways the world could end. As host, Baruchel met with scientists and experts to discuss these risks and possible solutions.
In 2023, Baruchel had a main role as BlackBerry co-founder Mike Lazaridis in the movie BlackBerry. For this role, he won a Canadian Screen Award for Best Lead Performance in a Comedy Film. In 2024, he joined the cast of a romantic comedy film called Mile End Kicks. He is also set to play Ken Carter in a comedy film about the Canadian stunt driver.
Personal Life
Jay Baruchel was engaged to actress Alison Pill from 2011 to 2013. In May 2018, he announced his engagement to Rebecca-Jo Dunham. They got married on September 21, 2019, in Portugal.
Baruchel has several tattoos. These include a Celtic cross on his right arm, which shows his Irish heritage, and a red maple leaf on his chest. He is a big fan of the Scottish football club Celtic. In 2016, he helped produce a documentary about why he loves the club so much.
