Plot Summary
Life in Berk
One year after becoming their leader, Hiccup and his Night Fury dragon, Toothless, are busy. They, along with their friends, rescue dragons from hunters. They bring these dragons to their home island, Berk. Berk has become a busy place, full of both humans and dragons.
However, the island is now too crowded with dragons. Hiccup wants to find the "Hidden World." This is a safe place for dragons that his father, Stoick, used to talk about.
Grimmel the Dragon Hunter
Meanwhile, a white female Fury dragon is captured by warlords. They give her to a famous dragon hunter named Grimmel the Grisly. Grimmel plans to use her as bait to catch Toothless. He wants Toothless to be an "alpha" dragon for the warlords.
Toothless soon finds the white Fury in the woods. Astrid, Hiccup's friend, calls her a "Light Fury." Toothless and the Light Fury are drawn to each other. But the Light Fury senses Hiccup nearby and flies away.
Hiccup and his friend Tuffnut then find Grimmel's dragon traps in the area. That night, Grimmel visits Hiccup. He demands that Hiccup hand over Toothless. Grimmel also reveals that he hunted almost all other Night Furies in the world. Hiccup had planned a trap for Grimmel, but Grimmel escapes. His Deathgripper dragons burn down Hiccup's house and much of Berk.
Searching for a New Home
Because of this attack, Hiccup decides that everyone must leave Berk. He gathers all the people and dragons. They begin a journey to find the Hidden World. They hope to find safety from dragon hunters there.
During their journey, the people of Berk find an island. They first plan to just rest there. But soon, they decide to settle down and call it "New Berk."
Toothless is having trouble flying alone, which makes it hard for him to be with the Light Fury. So, Hiccup builds a new automatic tail for Toothless. With his new tail, Toothless flies off. He meets the Light Fury and they fly together to a secret place.
The Hidden World Discovered
Hiccup's mother, Valka, is scouting the area. She sees Grimmel's army coming closer and tells Hiccup. Hiccup and the dragon riders try to capture Grimmel. But they fall into his trap and barely escape. Ruffnut is captured, but she annoys Grimmel so much that he lets her go.
Hiccup, Astrid, and her dragon Stormfly go looking for Toothless. They find the Hidden World. They see Toothless and the Light Fury leading the dragons there. They are a happy couple. When Hiccup and Astrid are discovered, Toothless saves them. He brings them back to New Berk. Hiccup realizes that humans would not be safe in the Hidden World.
Ruffnut returns, but Grimmel secretly follows her to New Berk. Grimmel appears and captures Toothless and the Light Fury. Because Toothless is an alpha, Grimmel can control all of Berk's dragons by holding the Light Fury hostage.
The Final Battle
Astrid encourages Hiccup to act. Hiccup and the dragon riders set out to stop Grimmel and his army. They use special wingsuits to glide and surprise Grimmel's army. A big battle begins, and they free the dragons.
With help from Stormfly, Hiccup frees Toothless. But Grimmel uses a drug on the Light Fury to make her obey him. Hiccup and Toothless chase Grimmel and defeat his Deathgrippers. However, Grimmel tranquilizes Toothless in mid-air. Toothless falls helplessly.
Hiccup realizes he cannot save Toothless alone. He frees the Light Fury and asks her to save Toothless. Hiccup is ready to sacrifice himself to save his best friend. Both Hiccup and Grimmel fall towards the sea. But the Light Fury returns and saves Hiccup. Grimmel falls to his death.
A New Beginning
Back on the island, Toothless and Hiccup understand something important. Dragons will never be truly safe in the human world. Hiccup says a sad goodbye to Toothless. All the people of Berk tearfully set their dragons free. The Light Fury leads the dragons away to live in the Hidden World, and Toothless follows them.
Some time later, Hiccup and Astrid get married. They become the leaders of New Berk.
Years pass. Toothless and the Light Fury have three baby dragons called Night Lights. Hiccup, Astrid, and their two children sail to the edge of the Hidden World to visit them. Hiccup introduces his children to Toothless. Then, Hiccup and Astrid fly with their children on Toothless and Stormfly. The Light Fury and their babies fly with them. Hiccup promises that until humans are ready to live peacefully with dragons, the dragons will stay hidden. The people of Berk will guard their secret.
