About the Book's Background
The animals you meet in Giggle, Giggle, Quack first appeared in another book. That book was also by Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin. It was called Click, Clack, Moo: Cows That Type. In that first story, the cows learned to type. They used a typewriter to make demands to Farmer Brown. This new book continues the adventures of these very smart and sometimes mischievous farm animals.
The Story of the Farm
Bob Takes Over the Farm
Farmer Brown decided to take a vacation. He left his brother, Bob, in charge of his farm animals. Farmer Brown told Bob to follow his instructions carefully. He believed everything would be fine. As Farmer Brown drove away, he thought he heard giggles and snickers. But he couldn't be sure.
Duck appeared just as Farmer Brown left. Bob gave Duck a long stare. Then Bob went inside the house. Duck quickly made a note.
Duck's Tricky To-Do List
Inside the house, Bob read the first note. It said, "Tuesday night is Pizza night. (Not the frozen kind!). The hens prefer anchovies."
About 30 minutes later, a pizza delivery person arrived. They were on a bicycle selling hot pizza at Bob's Farm. That very night, Bob carried his lantern. He walked outside to check on his animals with Duck. Everything seemed fine.
The next day, Bob read the second note. It said, "Wednesday is bath day for the Pigs. Wash them with my favorite bubble bath. Dry them off with my good towels. Remember, they have sensitive skin." Bob washed the pigs in the bathtub very quickly.
Farmer Brown called his brother on the telephone to check in. He asked Bob if he fed the animals like Duck wrote. After Bob finished feeding the animals, he counted seven empty pizza boxes. Later, Bob asked his brother about the note about the pigs. Bob proudly started taking care of the animals. He gave Duck a long stare. But Duck was too busy sharpening his pencil to notice.
Farmer Brown then suggested that Bob keep Duck inside the house. He said Duck was a bad influence on the cows.
Movie Night and Farmer Brown's Return
Soon, Duck wrote a third note. It said, "Thursday night is movie night. It's the cows' turn to pick." Later that night, Bob was in the kitchen popping corn. The animals sneaked into the living room to watch "The Sound of Moosic."
Suddenly, they heard the phone ring. Farmer Brown had called to check on his animals. But he heard them giggling on the other end. He then realized his animals had done something they weren't supposed to. He yelled, "DUCK!!!"
The animals heard him from the other end. Duck quickly wrote a secret message. It said, "It's for you, Bob!" Farmer Brown was very upset with the animals. He immediately came back early from his vacation.
