Gilbert C. Bartosh Sr. (born May 21, 1930 – died June 4, 2016) was a famous American football player and coach. He is remembered for his success in leading football teams. He coached at the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) from 1974 to 1976.

Meet Gil Bartosh: The "Granger Ghost"
Gil Bartosh was born in Granger, Texas. He was an amazing football player for Granger High School from 1945 to 1948. People even called him the "Granger Ghost" because he was so good! Many say he was the best player ever from Granger.
After high school, he played quarterback at Texas Christian University (TCU) for four years. In 1951, during his junior year, he was a top player in the Southwest Conference. He was even named an All-American, which means he was one of the best college players in the country!
In 1955, Gil Bartosh played professional football for the BC Lions in Canada. He led his team in touchdowns that year.
From Player to Coach: A Winning Career
After a shoulder injury, Gil Bartosh stopped playing football and started coaching. He became a head football coach at Milby High School in Houston, Texas. From 1959 to 1961, his teams won two District Championships.
In 1962, he moved to Lee High School in Houston. His teams there were also very strong, winning zone championships in 1964 and 1965.
The Permian High School Triumph
After working as an assistant coach at Rice University, Bartosh became the head coach at Permian High School in Odessa, Texas in 1971. This was a very important part of his career.
In 1972, he led the Permian team to an incredible season. They won every single game, going 14–0! They won the Texas 5A state championship. This amazing achievement also earned them the title of "mythical high school football national champions."
Coaching College Teams
After his success at Permian, Bartosh became an assistant coach at Texas A&M University. Then, in 1974, he became the head coach for the UTEP Miners. He coached UTEP for three seasons, from 1974 to 1976.
Later, he also coached at New Mexico and Midland Lee High School.
Legacy and Later Life
Gil Bartosh was a very respected coach. In 1989, he was honored by being inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame. This shows how much he meant to high school football in Texas.
Gil Bartosh passed away on June 4, 2016, in Liberty Hill, Texas, where he lived.
