History of Gilbert
Gilbert was named after Hezekiah Gilbert. He owned the land where the town was built. You can learn more about Gilbert's past at the Gilbert Historical Society.
Geography of Gilbert
Gilbert is located at 42°06′21″N 93°38′43″W / 42.105858°N 93.645185°W. The city covers a total area of about 1.10 square miles (2.85 square kilometers). All of this area is land.
The land around Gilbert has rolling hills. You can see traditional farm buildings and animals. There are also many fields for growing crops. Some newer neighborhoods are just south of the city. Gilbert's southern edge is two miles north of Ames.

Education in Gilbert
The Gilbert Community School District serves the Gilbert area. It includes Gilbert Elementary, Gilbert Intermediate School, Gilbert Middle School, and Gilbert High School.
Students attend elementary school for grades K-2. Intermediate school is for grades 3-5. Middle school covers grades 6-8, and high school is for grades 9-12.
Gilbert High School has a special agricultural program. Students interested in music also have many chances to get involved. The school offers advanced classes, like calculus. Students can also earn college credits through DMACC (Des Moines Area Community College). Since the school is close to DMACC and Iowa State University, students can take courses there for free. Gilbert also has a public library.
Two teachers from Gilbert have won the Presidential Mathematics teaching award. Angela Bonthuis received it in 2020. Denise Carlson received it in 2001.
City Services and Fun
Getting Around Gilbert
County Highway E23 is the main road that goes east and west through Gilbert. Highway 69 runs north and south. Gilbert is located between Ames and Story City on Highway 69. A Union Pacific train track also runs north and south through the city.
Parks and Recreation in Gilbert
Gilbert has several parks for outdoor fun. The main parks are Lions Park, Banford Park, and Upstill Park. There is a walking trail near the elementary school along Upstill Park. Upstill Park also has fields for soccer, baseball, and softball.
The town has a museum on Main Street. There are also two community centers. Nearby, in Story City and Ames, you can find many county parks. Ada Hayden Lake is located to the south in Ames.
Famous People from Gilbert
- Jerry McNertney (born 1936) - He played professional baseball as a catcher from 1964 to 1973.
- Christian Petersen (1885–1961) - He was a sculptor and a university teacher.
