Gilbert de Gant, Earl of Lincoln facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Gilbert de Gant, 1st Earl of Lincoln (born around 1126 – died 1156), was an important English nobleman. He was a loyal supporter of King Stephen during a difficult time in English history called The Anarchy. This was a period when different groups fought for control of the country.

Who Was Gilbert de Gant?

Gilbert de Gant was the son of Walter de Gant and Maud of Brittany. His father, Walter, was also known as Walter de Lindsey. Gilbert had important family connections. His uncle, Alan, 1st Earl of Richmond, was a key commander for King Stephen. Another uncle, Robert de Gant, served as the King's top legal advisor, known as the Lord Chancellor.

Fighting in The Anarchy

Gilbert de Gant was quite young when he joined King Stephen's side in a major battle. This was the Battle of Lincoln in 1141. During this battle, Gilbert was captured along with King Stephen.

After being captured, Gilbert was made to marry a woman named Rohese de Clare. She was related to an important family.

Becoming an Earl

Around 1149 or 1150, King Stephen gave Gilbert de Gant the title of Earl of Lincoln. This was a special honor. The King did this because another earl, William de Roumare, had switched sides. William had decided to support Empress Matilda, who was fighting King Stephen for the throne.

Gilbert de Gant remained very loyal to King Stephen. Records show that he and his brother Robert were among the few powerful nobles in Yorkshire who openly supported the King during these challenging years.

Family and Legacy

Gilbert de Gant and his wife, Rohese, had one child. Their daughter was named Alice de Gant. She later married Simon III de Senlis.

Gilbert also founded a religious house called Rufford Abbey. He started this abbey around 1148 in Nottinghamshire, England.
