Gilmer is a small, unincorporated community located in Gilmer County, West Virginia, in the United States. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
Where is Gilmer?
Gilmer is found along West Virginia Route 5, which is a road that helps people travel through the area. It's also located near the Little Kanawha River. This river is a branch of the larger Kanawha River. Gilmer is about 3 kilometers (or 3 miles) southeast of another community called Sand Fork.
A Bit of History
For many years, Gilmer had its own post office. A post office is where people can send and receive mail. The post office in Gilmer first opened its doors on November 28, 1905. It served the community for nearly a century before it closed on November 2, 2002. Even though the post office is gone, Gilmer remains a part of West Virginia's history and landscape.
