Geography
Giltner is a small place, covering about 1 square kilometer (or 0.39 square miles). It's all land, with no large bodies of water inside its village limits.
How Giltner Got Its Name
The village of Giltner has had a few different names over the years!
From Huntington to Bromfield
In 1886, a company called the Lincoln Land Company bought land in Union township. Their goal was to buy land along the railroad and build new towns there. In May of that year, they planned out a town and named it "Huntington." This name was chosen because it was the hometown of one of the company's employees in Pennsylvania.
However, in February 1887, the post office asked for a name change. "Huntington" sounded too much like another town, Hartington, Nebraska. So, the town was renamed "Bromfield." By 1890, Bromfield was growing. It had its own newspaper, the Bromfield Bulletin. There were also stores, a lumberyard, places to store grain, a school, and a church. At this time, nearly 200 people lived in Bromfield.
Becoming Giltner
The town's name changed again in 1895. Once more, the post office requested it because "Bromfield" was too similar to Bloomfield, Nebraska. The new name, "Giltner," was chosen to honor H. M. Giltner. He was the minister who helped start the town's Presbyterian church.
Baseball History
Giltner was once home to a minor league baseball team! In 1903, the Giltner team was one of the first teams in the Central Nebraska League. This was a small, independent league with five teams. However, the Central Nebraska League didn't last long and ended after the 1903 season.
