Early Life and Anti-Fascist Actions
Gino Lucetti was born in Italy. After World War I, he became involved in many political disagreements. He strongly opposed the fascist movement that was growing in Italy.
In 1925, he had a serious argument with a fascist supporter. During this event, Lucetti was injured while trying to get away. Despite his injury, he managed to escape Italy by ship and went to Marseilles.
The Attempt to Stop Mussolini
Lucetti later returned to Italy. He used a different name, Ermete Giovannini. His goal was to try and stop Benito Mussolini. He planned this attempt by himself.
On September 11, 1926, Lucetti acted on his plan. He was in Rome, near Porta Pia. Mussolini was on his usual route from his home, Villa Torlonia, to his office. Lucetti threw a device towards Mussolini's car.
The device exploded on the ground. It caused minor injuries to eight people nearby. However, Mussolini himself was not hurt. When the police arrested Lucetti, he bravely stated his intentions. He said he was determined to stop Mussolini.
Imprisonment and Death
After his attempt, Gino Lucetti was sentenced to 30 years in prison. He spent many years in jail. In 1943, he was released from prison. This happened when Napoli was freed during World War II.
Sadly, just a few days later, on September 17, 1943, Lucetti died. He was on the island of Ischia. He was killed during an air attack by German forces.
Legacy
