Giuliano di Lorenzo de' Medici (born March 12, 1479 – died March 17, 1516) was an important Italian nobleman. He was the third son of the famous Lorenzo the Magnificent. Giuliano ruled the city of Florence for a few years. He was also given the title of Duke of Nemours in France.
Giuliano's Early Life

Giuliano was born in Florence, a famous city in Italy. He grew up with his brothers, Piero and Giovanni. Giovanni later became Pope Leo X, a very powerful leader of the Catholic Church. His cousin, Giulio de' Medici, also became a Pope, Pope Clement VII.
Ruling Florence
Giuliano's older brother, Piero, briefly ruled Florence after their father Lorenzo died. But in 1494, a group of people who wanted Florence to be a republic (a city ruled by its citizens, not a family) made the Medici family leave. Giuliano then moved to Venice.
The Medici family returned to power later. This happened after a group called the Holy League, led by Spain and supported by Pope Julius II, pushed the French forces out of Italy. These French forces had supported the republicans in Florence.
Giuliano became the ruler of Florence in 1513. This was after his brother Giovanni was chosen to be Pope Leo X. Giuliano ruled Florence until he passed away in 1516.
Family and Titles
Giuliano married Filiberta of Savoy in 1515. She was the daughter of Philip II, Duke of Savoy. This marriage happened at the French court. His brother, Pope Leo X, helped arrange it.
In the same year, King Francis I of France (who was Filiberta's nephew) gave Giuliano the title of Duke of Nemours. This title had recently returned to the French crown. The French leaders seemed to be preparing Giuliano to rule Naples. However, Giuliano died unexpectedly. His nephew, Lorenzo II de' Medici, took over as ruler of Florence.
Giuliano had one son, Ippolito de' Medici. Ippolito later became a cardinal, an important position in the Catholic Church.
Art and Legacy
A famous portrait of Giuliano was painted in Rome by Raphael. Raphael was a favorite painter of Pope Leo X. The painting shows Rome's Castel Sant'Angelo in the background.
Giuliano's tomb is in the Medici Chapel of the Church of San Lorenzo in Florence. The tomb is decorated with sculptures called Night and Day. These were created by the famous artist Michelangelo. Michelangelo also made a statue of Giuliano for the tomb.
It is important not to confuse Giuliano di Lorenzo de' Medici with his uncle, Giuliano di Piero de' Medici. His uncle's tomb is also in the Medici Chapel. His uncle is famous for being killed in the Pazzi Conspiracy.
