Giulio Carlo Argan (born May 17, 1909 – died November 12, 1992) was an important Italian art historian, art critic, and politician. He was known for his deep knowledge of art and his role in public life.

Early Life and Education

Giulio Carlo Argan was born in Turin, a city in Italy. He went to the University of Turin and finished his studies in 1931. In 1928, he joined the National Fascist Party, which was a political group at the time.

Career in Art and Culture

In the 1930s, Argan worked for the National Antiquity and Arts Directorate. This job involved protecting and managing Italy's historical and artistic treasures. He worked in Turin, then in Modena, and later in Rome.

While in Rome, he helped create the Istituto Superiore per la Conservazione ed il Restauro. This is an important institute that teaches people how to restore old artworks and buildings. He also led a magazine called Le Arti.

Argan published an art textbook for high school students in 1938. In the 1940s, he wrote for Primato magazine.

Teaching and Major Works

After World War II, Argan became a university professor. He taught in Palermo and, starting in 1959, at the university in Rome. He also helped start a publishing company called Il Saggiatore.

Argan was a member of the Superior Council of Antiquities and Fine Arts. This council helped make decisions about Italy's cultural heritage. He stayed on the council until 1974.

In 1968, he published his most famous book, Storia dell'Arte Italiana. This title means "History of Italian Art." In 1973, he founded the Rome ISIA. This is Italy's oldest school for industrial design, which is about designing everyday products.

Political Career

Giulio Carlo Argan made history when he became the first Communist mayor of Rome. He served as mayor from 1976 to 1979. This was a significant role, as Rome is the capital city of Italy.

Later Life and Recognition

In 1992, Argan was chosen as a Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. This is a special honor given to important thinkers and leaders from around the world. He passed away in Rome later that year.
