The glabrous cone snail, known scientifically as Conus damottai, is a fascinating type of sea snail. It's a marine gastropod, which means it's a kind of mollusk that moves on a "foot" and often has a shell. This snail belongs to the Conidae family, also known as the cone snails.

Cone snails are known for their beautiful, cone-shaped shells. However, they are also predatory animals. This means they hunt other creatures for food. They can also be venomous. Because of this, it's very important to be careful around live cone snails. It's best not to touch them at all.

There are two main types, or subspecies, of Conus damottai. One is called Conus damottai damottai. The other is Conus damottai galeao, which is now considered its own species, Conus galeao.

What Does the Glabrous Cone Look Like?

The shell of an adult glabrous cone snail is quite small. It usually measures between 16 millimeters and 30 millimeters long. That's about the size of a small button or a large marble.

Where Does the Glabrous Cone Live?

This special snail lives in the waters of the Cape Verde archipelago. This is a group of islands in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean.

Each subspecies of Conus damottai lives in a specific area. The Conus damottai galeao subspecies is found only off the island of Maio. You can find it near places like Baía do Galeão. The Conus damottai damottai subspecies lives only off the island of Boa Vista.
