History of the Galleria
The Glendale Galleria was built by a group called Glendale Associates. Construction started in 1973. The mall cost about US$75 million to build. The main architect was Jon Jerde. He said his design was inspired by an essay about bringing life back to shopping areas.
The first stores to open in the mall were Buffums and The Broadway. They opened in August 1976. The Galleria officially opened its doors on October 14, 1976. Other stores like Ohrbach's and JCPenney opened later that year.
Mall Expansions and New Stores
The mall grew bigger with its first expansion, called Galleria II, in 1983. This added a new section and more stores. Nordstrom and Mervyn's were two of the new main stores. The very first Panda Express restaurant also opened in Galleria II that same year.
On March 28, 1987, the first ever Disney Store opened at the Glendale Galleria. By 1990, the mall was very large and earned a lot of money each year. In 1993, a three-story Robinsons-May store opened where the old Buffums store used to be.
The Glendale Galleria was chosen by Apple Inc. as one of the first two locations for an Apple Store in the world. Both opened on May 19, 2001.
In 2002, Brookfield Properties Retail Group bought the Glendale Galleria for $415 million. This company still owns the mall today.
Modern Additions and Popularity
The mall is home to the world's first three-story Target store. It opened on July 29, 2007. This Target store replaced the old Robinsons-May store. In 2013, a Bloomingdale's store opened, taking the place of the former Mervyn's.
In 2016, it was reported that over 30 million people visited the Galleria that year. This made it one of the top 100 shopping centers in the country. As of 2017, the Galleria has more than 200 stores. Six of these are large main stores, also known as anchor stores.
Architecture and Design
When it first opened, the Glendale Galleria had a simple brick design. It had no windows on the outside. This style was common for shopping malls built in the 1960s and 1970s.
Modern Renovation
The Galleria got a big makeover starting on April 25, 2012. The goal was to give the mall a fresh, modern look. They also wanted to make it easier for people to find their way around. New materials like white marble and black granite were added to the outside of the building.
The renovation cost US$57.5 million. It was finished on November 9, 2013. The new design was created by architects Kevin Kennon and Alan Loomis.
