A Look at Glennville's History
The first European settlers arrived in the Glennville area in 1854. These were George Ely and William Linn. The area was first called Linn's Valley. In 1860, a post office opened there.
The town's name changed to Glennville in 1872. This new name honored James Madison Glenn, a blacksmith who moved to the area in 1857. He opened the town's first hotel.
Glennville became an important stop for stagecoaches coming from Visalia. It was also a trading center for the surrounding valley. In 1860, a wagon road was built from Glennville to Kernville. This road was designed by Thomas Baker, who also founded the city of Bakersfield. Today, California State Route 155 still follows almost the same path as Baker's original road!
Glennville is still a quiet country town today. It has one restaurant and no gas station. About ten miles northeast of Glennville, you can find the Deer Creek Grove. This is the southernmost group of giant Giant Sequoia trees.
You can also see some very old buildings in Glennville. The Glennville adobe, a type of mud-brick building, was built before the American Civil War. It's still standing next to the fire station on Route 155 and is the oldest building in Kern County! The oldest church in the county, built in 1866, is also nearby.
