Glenvar is a small community located in western Roanoke County, Virginia, in the United States. It's known as a "census-designated place" (CDP). This means it's an area the U.S. Census Bureau identifies for statistics, but it doesn't have its own official city or town government. In 2010, about 976 people lived there.
Where is Glenvar?
The center of Glenvar is found along US 11 and US 460. This is about one mile west of the Salem city limits. The area of Roanoke County west of Salem is often called Glenvar. This includes other communities like Wabun, Fort Lewis, and Dixie Caverns. These areas are located in the Roanoke Valley between Poor Mountain and Fort Lewis Mountain.
Glenvar High School
Glenvar is home to Glenvar High School. This school serves most of the western parts of Roanoke County. It is an important part of the community for many students and families.
Local Economy
In January 2020, the Swedish truck company Volvo announced plans for a new factory in Glenvar. This factory would assemble trucks for its company, Mack Trucks. The company expected to hire about 250 people for this new plant. However, the global coronavirus pandemic caused a temporary stop in production at all Mack (Volvo) locations. This included plants in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia.
