Fort Lewis Mountain is a large mountain in Virginia, U.S.. It stretches from Ironto in Montgomery County to Masons Cove in Roanoke County. The mountain is an important natural landmark in the region.
The small community of Bradshaw is located in a narrow valley. This valley sits between the south side of Catawba Mountain and the north side of Fort Lewis Mountain. The southern part of Fort Lewis Mountain faces the western Roanoke Valley. It is directly across from Poor Mountain, another notable peak.
Fort Lewis Mountain is separated from Brushy Mountain by a narrow gap. This gap was formed by Masons Creek. Brushy Mountain continues in the same southwest to northeast direction into Botetourt County. Another small gap separates Fort Lewis Mountain from Little Brushy Mountain. Little Brushy Mountain is a smaller peak, about 1,926 feet high. It is located in Roanoke County, just north of Salem.
Why Fort Lewis Mountain Got Its Name
This mountain was once known by different names. Its west side was called Butler Mountain, and its east side was Deyerle Mountain. The mountain was later renamed for Fort Lewis. This fort was built in the early 1800s. It was located in western Roanoke County, near the city of Salem.
The fort itself was named after Andrew Lewis. He was a famous general from the colonial era. He lived in the area during that time.
