Gloria De Piero (born 21 December 1972) is a British broadcaster and former politician. She was a Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashfield from 2010 to 2019. An MP is a person elected to represent a group of people in the UK Parliament.

Before becoming an MP, Gloria De Piero worked in television. She was a political editor for GMTV, a morning TV show. After leaving politics, she returned to broadcasting. Since 2021, she has been a presenter on GB News.

Early Life and Education

Gloria De Piero was born on 21 December 1972 in Bradford, England. Her parents moved to the United Kingdom from Italy. They worked in textile factories in Bradford.

When Gloria was young, her family faced tough times. Her father became unwell, and her mother stopped working to care for him. This meant the family lived on government support.

Gloria went to Yorkshire Martyrs Catholic College. She earned five GCSEs. Then she studied at Bradford College, where she gained two A Levels.

At 18, she joined Labour Students, a group for students who support the Labour Party. She studied sociology at the University of Central England and the University of Westminster. She earned a first-class degree. She also completed a master's degree at Birkbeck, University of London.

Media Career

Gloria De Piero started her career in television as a researcher. She worked for ITV on the Jonathan Dimbleby show. Later, she moved to the BBC and worked on On the Record.

From 2003 to 2010, she was the political editor for GMTV. This meant she reported on political news for the show.

In 2020, Gloria De Piero returned to broadcasting. She became a presenter on Times Radio. She hosted her own show and co-hosted a political show called G&T. In 2021, she joined GB News, a new TV channel. She hosts a show called The Briefing: Lunchtime with Gloria De Piero. In 2022, she launched another interview show called Gloria Meets.

Parliamentary Career

Becoming an MP (2010-2015)

In 2010, Gloria De Piero decided to become a politician. She left her job at GMTV to try and become the Labour candidate for the Ashfield area. The previous MP for Ashfield, Geoff Hoon, was stepping down.

On 21 March 2010, she was chosen as the Labour Party's candidate. In the 2010 general election, she was elected as the MP for Ashfield. She won by a small number of votes.

After becoming an MP, Gloria De Piero was given important roles in the Labour Party. In October 2010, the Labour leader, Ed Miliband, made her a shadow culture minister. This means she was part of the opposition team that would take on the government's culture policies.

In 2011, she became the Shadow Minister for Crime Prevention. In 2013, she was promoted to the shadow cabinet. She became the Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities. The shadow cabinet is a team of senior opposition MPs who "shadow" (or watch over) government ministers.

In 2012, Gloria De Piero went on a national tour called 'Why Do People Hate Me?'. She visited different places like bingo halls and golf clubs. She wanted to understand why people felt unhappy with politicians. She wrote that she wanted to hear their feelings in their own words.

In the 2015 general election, Gloria De Piero was re-elected as the MP for Ashfield. She won with a much larger number of votes this time.

In September 2015, she was elected to a committee within the Labour Party. When Jeremy Corbyn became the new Labour leader, Gloria De Piero was made Shadow Minister for Young People and Voter Registration. This was a new role in the shadow cabinet.

However, in June 2016, she resigned from her shadow cabinet position. Many other MPs also resigned at this time. They believed that Jeremy Corbyn could not lead the party to win a general election.

Gloria De Piero supported the UK staying in the European Union (EU) in the 2016 EU referendum. About 70% of the people in her local area, Ashfield, voted for the UK to leave the EU. She also supported Owen Smith in his attempt to replace Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader in 2016.

In the 2017 United Kingdom general election, Gloria De Piero won her seat in Ashfield again. But her majority was very small, only 441 votes. The next month, she accepted a role as Shadow Justice Minister in Jeremy Corbyn's team.

In July 2019, she announced that she would not stand for election again. She also resigned from her role as Shadow Justice Minister. On 12 December 2019, Lee Anderson became the new MP for Ashfield. He was from the Conservative Party and had previously worked for Gloria De Piero.

After the UK Parliament approved Boris Johnson's Brexit deal, Gloria De Piero shared her thoughts. She tweeted that she regretted not voting against her party's instructions. She felt she should have been braver because she believed the instruction was wrong.

Personal Life

Gloria De Piero married James Robinson in 2012. James Robinson worked as a journalist for The Guardian and The Observer. He also worked for a public relations company and was the communications director for Tom Watson, a former deputy leader of the Labour Party.
