Parliamentary Career
Becoming an MP (2010-2015)
In February 2010, Gloria De Piero left her job at GMTV to become a political candidate. She wanted to represent the Labour Party in the Ashfield constituency in the 2010 general election. The previous MP for Ashfield, Geoff Hoon, was stepping down.
On March 21, 2010, she was chosen as the Labour candidate. She won the election with a small majority of 192 votes. This was a much smaller lead than the previous election.
After becoming an MP, Gloria was appointed to important roles within the Labour Party. In October 2010, Ed Miliband, the Labour leader, made her a shadow culture minister. In 2011, she became the Shadow Minister for Crime Prevention. In 2013, she was promoted to the shadow cabinet as the Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities.
In 2012, Gloria started a project called Why Do People Hate Me?. She traveled around the country to understand why people felt unhappy with politicians. She spoke to different groups of people, including retired miners.
Later Years in Parliament (2015-2019)

In the 2015 general election, Gloria De Piero was re-elected as the MP for Ashfield. Her majority increased to 8,820 votes.
In September 2015, she was elected to a committee within the Labour Party. When Jeremy Corbyn became the new Labour leader, Gloria was made Shadow Minister for Young People and Voter Registration. This was a new role in the shadow cabinet.
However, in June 2016, she resigned from her shadow cabinet position. Many of her colleagues also resigned because they believed Jeremy Corbyn could not lead the party to win a general election.
Gloria supported the UK staying in the European Union (EU) during the 2016 UK EU membership referendum. Even though about 70% of the people in her constituency voted to leave the EU, she continued to support remaining. She also supported Owen Smith in his attempt to replace Jeremy Corbyn as Labour leader in 2016.
In the June 2017 general election, Gloria De Piero's majority in Ashfield became very small, only 441 votes. The next month, she accepted a role in Jeremy Corbyn's team as Shadow Justice Minister.
In July 2019, she announced that she would not stand for re-election in the next general election. On December 12, 2019, Lee Anderson, who used to be her office manager, became the new MP for Ashfield. He was elected as a Conservative MP.
