Gloria González is a talented Puerto Rican composer. She was born on April 6, 1944. Gloria has written many popular pop and salsa songs.
Early Life and School
Gloria González Pérez was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. Her parents, Jorge González and Blanca Pérez, were both from Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Gloria was their only child.
She went to Manuel Padre Rufo School in Santurce for elementary school. She then attended República Del Perú Jr. High. In 1958, Gloria moved to New York City with her father. There, she went to P.S. 71 in Manhattan.
Later, Gloria returned to Puerto Rico and got married. In 1967, she decided to go back to school. She graduated from Ramírez College as a paralegal secretary.
Her Music Career
In 1970, Gloria started working for the Justice Department. But in 1983, she had to retire because of a back injury. During this time, Gloria became very interested in popular music. She decided to study at the Music Conservatory. She then focused completely on writing songs.
Gloria has written over 300 songs, especially in the salsa style. Many famous artists have sung her romantic songs. These include Marco Antonio Muñiz, Gilberto Santa Rosa, El Gran Combo, Tony Vega, Frankie Ruiz, Bobby Valentín, Andy Montañez, Carmita Jiménez, Nano Cabrera, Los Hispanos, and Cheo Feliciano.
One of her most well-known songs is "Así Es Mi Tierra." The group Sol y Canto performed this song. They were joined by the Springfield Symphony Orchestra on February 28, 2004.
Awards and Special Honors
Gloria González has received many awards and special recognitions. The Puerto Rican Institute of Culture honored her in 1986. She also won Broadway Awards in 1988 and a Paoli Award.
The cities of Carolina and Arecibo also gave her awards in 2002. She has been recognized in theaters and on TV shows. These honors came from Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Chile, and New York City.
In June 1991, Gloria was given a special honor. The annual National Day of Salsa was dedicated to her. This day is now celebrated every year in Puerto Rico on the third Sunday in March. Bobby Valentín was also honored that day.
In 2007, she was recognized again. This time it was at the "Asociación Borinqueña" of Central Florida. This event took place in Orlando, Florida. They honored her for her long career as a composer.
Her Family Life
Gloria González has four children. She has two daughters, Catherine Ivonne and María de los Ángeles (who is adopted), from her first marriage. With her second husband, Juan Rodríguez, she has a son named Carlos Javier.
In 2004, Gloria moved to Central Florida. She still lives there today.
