Discovering Glynde

Glynde is a suburb that has been around for a long time. It covers about 0.9 square kilometers. People have lived and worked here since it was first planned out in 1856.

How Glynde Got Its Name

Glynde was created in 1856 by a man named Edward Castres Gwynne. He was an important person who helped plan out this area. Edward Gwynne named the suburb after a village in Sussex, England, called Glynde. His father used to be a rector (a type of church leader) in that English village.

Edward Gwynne also named the nearby suburb of Firle. He had a very large garden on his estate near the English village. This garden even had an "orangery," which is like a special greenhouse for growing orange trees. It was huge, covering about eight acres!

Important Places in Glynde

One special place in Glynde is the historic Glynde House. This house is very old and important. It is officially listed on the South Australian Heritage Register. This means it's a protected building because of its history and special design.
