Firle is a suburb located in Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia. It is part of the local government area called the City of Norwood Payneham St Peters.

History of Firle

How Firle Got Its Name

The suburb of Firle was planned in 1881 by a man named Edward Castres Gwynne. He was born in England, near two towns called Firle and Glynde. He named the new suburb "Firle" after his hometown. Interestingly, the nearby suburb of Glynde is also named after the other town near where he grew up.

Edward Gwynne's Journey

Edward Gwynne came to South Australia in April 1838 on a ship called the Lord Goderich. He bought a large area of land, about 500 acres, on the hills east of Adelaide. He became an important person in the new colony. In 1857, he was chosen to be part of the first government in South Australia. Later, he became a judge in the Supreme Court of South Australia.

Developing the Suburb

When Edward Gwynne retired in 1881, he decided to develop his land into a suburb. At first, the land was divided into big blocks. These were used by settlers for large market gardens, growing fruits and vegetables, and for farms with wheat and hay.

Over time, Firle slowly changed into a place where people lived. This happened as new ways to travel, like trams and buses, started in the early 1900s. After World War II, many people who moved to Australia from other countries also settled in Firle. This helped the area grow even more.

Old Buildings in Firle

A house called Firle House was built around 1882 by Henry William Martin. Sadly, this house was taken down in the 1980s. However, Edward Gwynne's original family home, known as 'Glynde House', is still standing. It is located at 54 Avenue Road in the neighbouring suburb of Glynde. This historic house is now protected on the South Australian State Heritage Register.
