Early Life and How She Started
Go Ara was born in Jinju, a city in South Korea. Because her father was a soldier, her family moved around Korea a lot when she was young.
When she was in middle school, a friend told her about an audition for a talent agency called SM Entertainment. In 2003, she won the SM Entertainment Teen Model Contest. This was her first step into the entertainment world.
Her Acting Career
Becoming a Star (2003–2012)
In 2003, Go Ara was chosen for the main role of Lee Ok-rim in the KBS teen drama Sharp. Her character was a confident and ambitious middle school girl. This role quickly made her very popular. She even played the same character in the show's sequel, Sharp 2.
Later, in 2006, Go Ara starred in the SBS drama Snow Flower. Her acting in this show, where she played a rebellious character, earned her an award at the Baeksang Arts Awards.
Go Ara's first movie was a big Japanese film called Genghis Khan: To the Ends of the Earth and Sea in 2007. She played Khulan, the wife of Genghis Khan. She was chosen for this role from over 40,000 people who auditioned! She also acted in another Japanese film, Dance Subaru, because she could speak Japanese well.
In 2008, she appeared in the MBC drama Who Are You?. This comedy, where characters switch bodies, became popular with international fans. This helped her become more known as part of the Korean Wave (the spread of South Korean culture worldwide).
In 2012, Go Ara made her first South Korean movie appearance in the sports film Pacemaker. For this role, she gained 5 kilograms to play a pole vaulter. She also showed off her singing and dancing skills in the 2012 movie Papa. She was praised for her acting and fluent English in this film.
More Popular Roles (2013–Present)
Go Ara's popularity grew even more with the drama Reply 1994 (2013). To play her character, Sung Na-jung, she cut her hair short and gained weight. Many people were surprised by her casting at first, but her acting in the show received a lot of praise from both critics and viewers. She was even nominated for Best Actress awards for her performance.
After that, she played the only female rookie detective in the 2014 police drama You're All Surrounded.
In 2015, Go Ara returned to movies with The Magician, a historical romance where she played a princess. She then starred in Phantom Detective, an action movie.
