Golden Lake is a beautiful body of water located in Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. It's found on the Bonnechere River, about 25 kilometers (15 miles) southwest of a town called Pembroke, Ontario. The lake is surrounded by different townships, including North Algona-Wilberforce and Bonnechere Valley, and also by the land of the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation.

About Golden Lake

Golden Lake is quite interesting because it's made up of three main parts. The biggest part is at the western end. Then, there's a slightly smaller section towards the east. Finally, a much smaller section is at the very eastern end, which is where the lake flows back into the Bonnechere River.

What's in a Name?

The name "Golden Lake" is quite special! It's said that the lake got its name from tiny, shiny flecks of a mineral called pyrite. Pyrite is often called "fool's gold" because it looks like real gold but isn't. You can sometimes see these sparkling bits on the bottom of the lake near the shore. Not far from Golden Lake, there's another lake named Lake Doré. "Doré" is the French word for "golden," which is a fun connection!

Fishing and Fun

Golden Lake is a popular spot for fishing! It's well-known for its smallmouth bass and Northern pike. If you like to swim or just enjoy the water, you'll be happy to know that most parts of the lake have a smooth, sandy bottom.

Local Culture

Near Golden Lake, you can find the Omàmiwininì Pimàdjwowin, which is also known as the Algonquin Way Cultural Centre. This important center is located within the Algonquins of Pikwàkanagàn First Nation territory. It helps share and preserve the rich culture and history of the Algonquin people.
