Peanut Chews are a popular candy bar made by an American company called Just Born. These chewy treats are packed with peanuts and a sweet molasses flavor, all covered in a tasty chocolatey coating. You can find them in two main flavors: the original dark chocolatey kind and a milk chocolatey version. They are usually small, similar to the "fun size" candies you might get on Halloween. People living in Philadelphia, the surrounding area, and nearby Mid-Atlantic states know these candies very well.

The Sweet History of Peanut Chews

Peanut Chews were first created in 1917 by the Goldenberg Candy Company. This company was started by David Goldenberg, an immigrant from Romania, back in 1890.

Peanut Chews for Soldiers

When Peanut Chews were first made, they weren't just for fun! They were actually developed for the U.S. military during World War I. Soldiers needed snacks that gave them lots of energy and protein, and Peanut Chews fit the bill perfectly. Their unique taste and high-energy recipe made them a favorite among the troops.

From Military to Main Street

After the war, in 1921, David Goldenberg's son, Harry Goldenberg, decided to sell Peanut Chews to everyone. He introduced the first wrapped Peanut Chews candy for stores. In the 1930s, the candy changed from being one big bar to smaller, individual pieces. This made them easier to share and enjoy.

In 1949, Harry and Sylvia Goldenberg, who were the second generation of the family, took over the part of the company that made Peanut Chews. They wanted to focus only on making these popular candies.

A New Owner for a Classic Candy

For many years, the Goldenberg Candy Company made Peanut Chews. But in 2003, another candy company called Just Born, Inc. bought the Peanut Chews brand. Just Born is based in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. They also bought the factory in Northeast Philadelphia where the candies were made.

After Just Born took over, they tried to make some changes to the candy's recipe and packaging. They also tried to sell Peanut Chews in more places, beyond the Mid-Atlantic states where they were already popular. However, they soon realized that the candy was losing some of its popularity in its main market, which stretches from Baltimore to New York City.

So, Just Born decided to focus their marketing efforts back on the original region. They also brought back the "Goldenberg's" name on the candy wrappers, giving it equal importance with "Peanut Chews." This helped remind people of the candy's long history and classic taste.

Are Peanut Chews Vegan?

Some people who follow a vegan diet enjoy the original dark chocolatey Peanut Chews. This is because the original recipe does not contain any milk or egg products. Many dark chocolates and some caramel candies are also made without these ingredients.
