Racing Career Highlights
Gonzalo showed great promise in a racing series called Formula 3000. He raced there for three seasons. In 1998, he won two races. These victories happened at famous tracks like Spa-Francorchamps and Nürburgring.
Formula 3000 Success
The next year, in 1999, he won another race in Monaco. He finished third overall in the championship standings for both 1998 and 1999. This showed he was one of the top young drivers.
Moving to CART Racing
Because of his success, Gonzalo got a chance to race in the CART series. This was a very high-level racing championship in North America. He joined Penske Racing, a well-known team. His first CART race was the Detroit Grand Prix in 1999. He even scored a point in this race.
A Tragic Accident
Gonzalo's second CART race was at the Laguna Seca Raceway in California. During a practice session, he was involved in a serious crash. His car went off the track at a fast corner called the Corkscrew. It hit a tire barrier and then a concrete wall.
Safety Improvements
The impact caused his car to flip over the barrier. Gonzalo was fatally injured in the accident. After this sad event, extra tire walls were put in place at the end of that straight section of the track. This was done to make the track safer for other drivers.
Future Plans
Before the accident, Gonzalo had already signed a contract. He was set to race in the 2000 CART championship with another team, Patrick Racing.
Legacy of "Gonchi"
Gonzalo was often called "Gonchi" by his friends and fans. In 2014, a documentary film was made about his life. It was called Gonchi and was released in Spanish. This film helps people remember his talent and passion for racing.
