What is Goodfare?
Goodfare is a type of community known as a hamlet. A hamlet is a very small settlement. It is usually even smaller than a village. Hamlets typically do not have their own local government. Instead, they are managed by a larger local authority. Goodfare is part of the County of Grande Prairie No. 1. This county helps to govern and provide services for the hamlet.
How Goodfare Got Its Name
Goodfare has an interesting story about how it got its name. In April 1919, the people living in the area wanted to have postal service. They asked for a post office to be set up. The residents chose the name "Goodfair" because they felt it described the area well. However, there was already a post office named Goodfair in Saskatchewan. Because of this, the name was changed slightly to the current spelling, Goodfare. The very first postmaster for Goodfare was a person named John Third. Before it was called Goodfare, the area was known by another name: Kempton.
