You can find Goodyears Bar along the North Yuba River and California State Route 49, about 3.25 miles (5.2 km) west-southwest of Downieville. It even has its own post office with ZIP code 95944, which opened way back in 1851! Before 1851, it was known as Slaughter's Bar.

How Goodyears Bar Got Its Name

In 1849, two brothers named Miles and Andrew Goodyear, along with Dr. Vaughan and Mr. Morrison, discovered gold here. They named the place Goodyears Bar to honor the Goodyear brothers. The brothers even built a cabin there, and miners searched for gold along Goodyears Creek.

Early Days and Community Life

As the community grew, a post office was set up on October 7, 1851. Mr. Woodruff was the first person in charge of it. A few years later, in 1856, the first school opened its doors, with Mrs. Massey as the first teacher.
