Gooloogong is a small village located in the middle of New South Wales, Australia. It's a quiet place where about 408 people live, according to the 2021 census.
Where is Gooloogong?
Gooloogong is mostly found in the Cowra Shire area. A small part of it is also in the Forbes Shire. The village is located almost exactly halfway between the towns of Cowra and Forbes. You can find it along the Lachlan Valley Way road. It is also close to the old town of Canowindra. The Lachlan River flows not far from the village.
A Peek into Gooloogong's History
Gooloogong was first used by a wealthy land owner named William Redfern Watt. Later, an Irish former convict, Edmond Sheahan, took over the land. He used this large area, which was about 22,400 acres, to raise cattle.
In 1861, a new law allowed more people to own land. This brought new settlers to the area, and soon a town started to grow. However, the town faced a big challenge: a severe flood. Because of the flood, the town had to be moved. It was rebuilt a little further away and on higher ground to stay safe from future floods. Today, not much is left of the original settlement. Gooloogong is also known for its special log cabin hall, which is a unique building in the village.
Community Fun: The Local Market
Gooloogong has a lively local market that is very popular. This market takes place on the second Sunday of every even-numbered month of the year. You can find it at the Recreation Park, where people gather to buy and sell local goods.
