Goolwa Beach is a cool place in the Australian state of South Australia. It's about 67 kilometers south of the Adelaide city centre. This area sits on land that looks out over Encounter Bay. It's also the name of a long, sandy beach. This beach stretches for 11 kilometers all the way to the Murray Mouth.
The name Goolwa Beach was first used for a private land area. Official boundaries for the area were set in 1993. They were later updated in August 2000.
Discovering Goolwa Beach
Goolwa Beach is a unique spot where the land meets the sea. It's a popular destination for families and surfers. The area offers a mix of natural beauty and fun activities.
Where is Goolwa Beach?
The Goolwa Beach area is bordered by Port Elliot Road to the north. To the south, it meets the coastline of Encounter Bay. The western part of the area is used for farming. The eastern part has houses and buildings. This urban area connects to the nearby towns of Goolwa and Goolwa South. The coastline itself is a protected area. This means it's kept natural for plants and animals.
Government and Local Area
Goolwa Beach is part of different government areas. For national elections, it's in the federal division of Mayo. For state elections, it's in the electoral district of Finniss. Locally, it's managed by the Alexandrina Council. These groups help make decisions for the community.
Fun at the Beach
The eastern end of Goolwa Beach is a hub of activity. You'll find parking here, along with public toilets and a small shop called a kiosk. This is also where the Goolwa Surf Life Saving Club is located. It officially opened in October 2019.
Right behind the Surf Life Saving Club, there's a special track. This track allows four-wheel drive vehicles to access Goolwa Beach. It leads towards the Murray River mouth. However, regular cars are not allowed on the beach to the west of this track.
Beach Safety and Conditions
Goolwa Beach has fine sand and waves that are usually about 2 meters high. It's known as one of the most dangerous beaches in South Australia. This is because it often has big waves, strong currents, and dangerous rip tides.
To keep everyone safe, a small part of Goolwa Beach is patrolled. This happens near the Goolwa Surf Life Saving Club. Lifesavers are on duty on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. This safety patrol runs during the summer season. It starts in early October and finishes in April. Always swim between the flags when lifesavers are on duty!
