Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova (born 11 May 1953) is a professor and lawyer from North Macedonia. She became the 6th President of North Macedonia in May 2024. She is the first woman to be elected president of her country.
She first ran for president in 2019 but lost to Stevo Pendarovski. In 2024, she ran again and won against Pendarovski by a large number of votes.

Early Life and Education
Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova was born on 11 May 1953, in Ohrid, which was then part of Yugoslavia. Today, Ohrid is in North Macedonia. She went to school in Skopje for both primary and secondary education.
She studied law at the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje. She earned her first degree there in 1978. Later, she also completed her master's degree at the same university. In 1994, she received her PhD from the University of Ljubljana. Her PhD topic was about how local governments work.
Career Highlights
Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova started teaching at the Faculty of Law in Skopje in 1989. She became a full professor in 2004. She taught important subjects like constitutional law. This is the law that sets up how a country's government works.
She also held several important roles in government. From 1990 to 1992, she was part of the group that helped write the country's constitution. She also served as a minister in the government from 1992 to 1994. She worked with the Council of Europe as an expert on local self-government. From 2008 to 2016, she was a member of the Venice Commission. This group gives advice on constitutional matters around the world. She has written about 200 scientific papers on law and political systems.
Running for President
In 2019, the VMRO-DPMNE political party chose her as their candidate for president. During her campaign, she said she would try to change the country's name back if she won. However, she lost the election to Stevo Pendarovski.
She ran for president again in 2024. This time, she won the election against Pendarovski. She became the first woman president of North Macedonia. Before her inauguration, she talked about changing an agreement with Bulgaria. She also spoke against including Bulgarians in North Macedonia's constitution. This is a condition for North Macedonia to join the European Union.
Presidency
Siljanovska-Davkova became president on 12 May 2024. In her first speech, she promised to make the country more "European" and to focus on the role of women in North Macedonia.
During her speech, she referred to her country as "Macedonia" instead of its official name, "North Macedonia." This caused some disagreement. The Greek ambassador left the ceremony because of this. Greece's foreign ministry said her actions went against an agreement between the two countries. They also said it could harm relations and North Macedonia's chances of joining the European Union. The President of the EU Commission also said that North Macedonia must respect the agreement to join the EU.
Siljanovska-Davkova's office later stated that she would respect the country's international agreements. They also said she has the right to use "Macedonia" as a personal way to identify herself. After her party won many seats in the 2024 parliamentary election, she asked the party leader to form a new government.
Personal Life
Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova is married to Blagoja Davkov. They have two children, Marija and Pavle. Blagoja is a lawyer, and they have been married for over 40 years. Their daughter Marija is a jeweler, and their son Pavle is a ski instructor.
She has strong views on some political agreements. She believes the Prespa Agreement with Greece, which changed the country's name, was against national law. She also thinks it violated human rights. She is also against the Good Neighborhood Agreement with Bulgaria. She does not support recognizing Bulgarians as an official ethnic minority in North Macedonia.
