Stevo Pendarovski (born 3 April 1963) is a politician from North Macedonia. He served as the fifth President of North Macedonia from 2019 to 2024.

Early Life and Education
Stevo Pendarovski was born on 3 April 1963 in Skopje, the capital city of North Macedonia. His family came from a village called Galičnik. He grew up in Skopje after a big earthquake happened there in 1963. Both of his parents were teachers.
Pendarovski went to Dositej Obradovikj School for his elementary studies and Cvetan Dimov gymnasium for his high school studies. He later studied at Ss. Cyril and Methodius University of Skopje. In 1987, he earned a degree in law. He continued his studies at the same university, getting a master's degree and a Ph.D. in Political Science.
Political Career Highlights
After finishing his law studies, Pendarovski first worked in a law office. Later, he joined the Ministry of Internal Affairs, which is like the country's police and security department. There, he worked as a security expert, analyzing important information.
In 1998, he became the head of the Ministry's Analysis and Research department. He also served as a spokesperson for the Ministry. He was the spokesperson during a conflict in the country in 2001.
In 2001, Pendarovski started working for President Boris Trajkovski as an advisor on national security. Sadly, President Trajkovski died in a plane crash in 2004. At the time of the crash, Pendarovski was representing the President in Ireland for an important meeting about North Macedonia joining the European Union. This meeting was then postponed.
From 2004 to 2005, Pendarovski led the State Election Commission, which organizes elections. In 2005, he returned to the President's office, this time advising President Branko Crvenkovski on national security and later on foreign policy. He left this role in 2009.
In 2008, Pendarovski also began teaching at the University American College in Skopje. He taught subjects like international relations and national security.
In 2014, the main opposition party, the Social Democratic Union, chose Pendarovski as their candidate for the presidential election.
Serving as President (2019–2024)


Stevo Pendarovski ran for president in the 2019 election. He was supported by the Social Democratic Union and the Democratic Union for Integration. He won the election with over 436,000 votes, which was 51.66% of all votes.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, President Pendarovski declared the first-ever state of emergency in North Macedonia. This was done to help control the spread of the coronavirus. This decision also helped make it possible for the country to hold a parliamentary election in 2020.
In February 2022, President Pendarovski showed kindness when he heard about an 11-year-old girl named Embla Ademi, who has Down syndrome, being bullied at school. He walked with her to her elementary school in Gostivar to show his support.
Personal Life
Stevo Pendarovski is married to Elizabeta Gjorgievska. She is a medical doctor who works at a clinic for children's dental health and is also a professor at a university in Skopje. They have one child, a son named Ognen.
