Gordon Schildenfeld (born March 18, 1985) is a Croatian football manager and former player. He played as a centre-back, which is a defensive position in football. Today, Gordon is the manager of the HNK Vukovar 1991 team in Croatia.
Club Career Highlights
Starting at Šibenik
Gordon Schildenfeld began his football journey at his hometown club, HNK Šibenik. He was very young, only 16 years old, when he played his first senior game. This was a big step for him. In the 2005–06 season, Gordon helped his team, Šibenik, get promoted to the top football league in Croatia.
Joining Dinamo Zagreb
After playing well in the top league, big clubs like Dinamo Zagreb became interested in Gordon. On January 2, 2007, he joined Dinamo Zagreb. Even though he was new to the top league, Gordon quickly became an important player for Dinamo. He helped the club win both the Croatian league title and the Croatian Cup. He even scored a key goal in the cup final!
During the 2007–08 season, Gordon also played in important European matches for Dinamo. He played in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Cup games. In one UEFA Cup match, he was sent off, meaning he had to miss some games.
Moving to Beşiktaş
On February 1, 2008, Gordon made an unexpected move to Beşiktaş, a top club in Turkey. He made his debut in the Turkish league on February 9, 2008.
Loan Spells: Duisburg and Sturm Graz
In September 2008, Gordon went on loan to MSV Duisburg in Germany. He played a few games there.
In July 2009, Gordon joined Sturm Graz in Austria on loan. He quickly became a regular player for the team. He played in 34 league matches and scored one goal. During this time, he also played in the UEFA Europa League and helped Sturm Graz win the Austrian Cup in 2010. He even scored two goals in one cup match! Because he played so well, Sturm Graz signed him permanently on June 8, 2010. He helped them win the Austrian Bundesliga title in the 2010–11 season.
Playing for Eintracht Frankfurt
On July 7, 2011, Gordon moved to Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany. He played almost every game in his first season, helping the club get promoted to the top German league, the Bundesliga.
Time in Russia and Greece
In July 2012, Gordon signed with Dynamo Moscow in Russia. After a short time there, he went on loan to PAOK in Greece.
Then, on August 2, 2013, he went on loan to Panathinaikos, another big Greek club. He stayed there for two years and became a very popular player. He helped Panathinaikos win the Greek Cup in 2014.
Return to Dinamo Zagreb
In the summer of 2015, Gordon returned to Dinamo Zagreb, the club where he had won titles before. He signed a contract to stay until 2018.
Anorthosis Famagusta
On July 6, 2017, Gordon joined Anorthosis Famagusta in Cyprus. He played many games for this club over several years.
International Career
Gordon also played for his country, Croatia. He first played for the Croatia national under-21 team in 2006.
He made his debut for the senior Croatia on November 14, 2009, in a friendly match. He played in six international games in 2010. His first competitive game for Croatia was in October 2010 during a qualifying match for the Euro 2012 tournament. He helped Croatia qualify for Euro 2012 and played in all three of their matches at the tournament.
On March 28, 2015, Gordon scored his first goal for the national team. It was during a Euro 2016 qualification match against Norway. He scored with a header from a corner kick, helping Croatia win the game 5–1. After Euro 2016, he did not play for the national team again.
Personal Life
Gordon Schildenfeld's family has roots in Slovenia and Austria. He met his wife, Christina Marsellou, in Athens in 2014. They have two children together: a son named Alexander Marsellos Schildenfeld, born in March 2017, and a daughter named Bella Marsellou Schildenfeld, born in September 2019. Gordon also has two daughters from his first marriage.
