Gore Hill is a small area located on the Lower North Shore of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It is found within the southern part of the suburb of Artarmon. It also sits in the north-west of the suburb of St Leonards.

The Story of Gore Hill

Gore Hill gets its name from William Gore. He was like the chief police officer in early Sydney. William Gore owned a large piece of land here. His property was about 150 acres (61 hectares).

Famous Landmarks in Gore Hill

Gore Hill is well-known for a few important things. It is where the Gore Hill Freeway begins and ends. This freeway connects Lane Cove to the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge.

It is also home to the ABC's Sydney television transmission tower. This tower is very tall, standing at 170 meters (558 feet). For over 40 years, Gore Hill was famous for the ABC's TV studios. These studios opened in 1956. They operated until June 2003. After that, the ABC moved its TV operations. They went to a new combined TV and radio studio in Ultimo.

Media and Local Facilities

Gore Hill is a hub for media companies. Fox Sports moved its main offices here in late 2012. Foxtel also set up its new headquarters in Gore Hill in mid-2017.

In the past, ATN Channel 7 had a TV transmission mast here. However, this mast was taken down in the early 1970s. Gore Hill is also home to the Royal North Shore Hospital. You can also find the historic Gore Hill Cemetery here. The Gore Hill Oval is another local spot. It is where the North Shore Bombers Australian Rules Football club plays.

Brick Making History

Bricks were first made in Gore Hill way back in 1828. This brick-making continued for a long time, until 1954. A special railway track, called a siding, was built in 1902. This siding connected the North Shore Railway to a brickworks. The brickworks was run by the North Sydney Brick and Tile Company.

Horses were used to pull open wagons along this track. These wagons carried goods. Around 1910, the railway line was made longer. It went through a tunnel under Reserve Road. This tunnel is now blocked off from public access. However, it still exists today. It is part of a building complex called Austcorp's Winevault.
