History of the Gorki Estate
The Gorki estate has a long and interesting history. For many years, it was a country home for wealthy and powerful families from Moscow.
A Grand Country House
Starting in the 18th century, the estate was owned by different noble families. In 1909, a wealthy woman named Zinaida Morozova bought it. She hired a famous architect, Fyodor Schechtel, to redesign the main house.
Schechtel updated the mansion in a style called Neoclassical. This style was inspired by ancient Greek and Roman buildings. He added a grand entrance with six tall columns, making the house look very impressive.
Lenin's Final Years
In 1918, the new Soviet government took control of the estate. It became a dacha (a Russian country house) for Vladimir Lenin. Lenin was a very important political figure who led the revolution that created the Soviet Union.
In September 1918, Lenin came to Gorki to recover after he was seriously injured in an attack. As he got older and his health grew worse, he spent more and more time at the estate. On May 15, 1923, he moved from the Moscow Kremlin to Gorki for good. He lived there quietly until he died on January 21, 1924.

After Lenin's death, the estate was turned into a museum to honor him. The town was also renamed Gorki Leninskiye. The house museum keeps many of Lenin's personal items exactly as he left them.
In 1987, a large, modern museum building was also opened on the estate. This museum tells the story of Lenin's life and work. Inside, you can see important things from his life, such as:
- His last will and testament, a very important document.
- His personal car, a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost.
- The wheelchairs he used when he was ill.
- A complete reconstruction of his office and apartment from the Kremlin.
In the estate's park, a monument called "The Death of the Leader" was added in 1958 to remember him. Today, Gorki Leninskiye is a popular place for people to visit and learn about Russian history.
