Grafton Village Cheese Company facts for kids
The Grafton Village Cheese Company is a famous cheesemaker located in Grafton, a town in the U.S. state of Vermont. This company is known for making delicious, aged cheddar cheese by hand.
History of Grafton Cheese
The Grafton Village Cheese Company has a long history. It started as the Grafton Cooperative Cheese Company in 1892. This first company was created to use extra milk from local farms.
Sadly, a fire caused the original company to close. But in the mid-1960s, it was brought back to life! The Windham Foundation, a group that helps keep Vermont's rural towns strong, assisted in its return.
Today, Grafton's cheddar cheese is special. It is made without synthetic hormones. Most of the milk comes from Jersey cows on family farms in Vermont. The most common cheese they sell is their block cheddar. These large blocks weigh about 40 pounds before they are cut into smaller sizes for customers.
In July 2008, the company opened a new production building and a store. This new location is in Brattleboro. The shop looks like a classic barn and is quite large. It sells over 70 types of cheeses, along with wine, local Vermont beers, fresh bread, maple syrup, and other tasty foods.
Grafton cheese has also won awards! In 2014, their Grafton Spring Brook milk Cheese won a big prize. It received the "Best USA Cheese trophy" at the 2014 International Cheese Awards.
