Grafton Village Cheese Company facts for kids
The Grafton Village Cheese Company is a famous cheesemaker located in the town of Grafton in the U.S. state of Vermont. This company is known for making special aged cheddar cheese by hand.
History of Grafton Cheese
The Grafton Village Cheese Company has a long history. It started as the Grafton Cooperative Cheese Company in 1892. That first company helped local farmers use their extra milk. Sadly, the original company closed down after a fire.
In the mid-1960s, the company was brought back to life. The Windham Foundation, a group that helps keep Vermont's small towns strong, helped rebuild it. Today, Grafton's cheddar cheese is made without artificial hormones. It mostly uses milk from Jersey cows on Vermont family farms. The most popular cheese they sell is their block cheddar. These are big 40-pound blocks that are then cut into smaller sizes for people to buy.
In July 2008, the company opened a new cheese-making plant and a shop in Brattleboro. This shop looks like a classic barn. It sells over 70 kinds of cheeses, along with wine, local Vermont drinks, fresh bread, maple products, and other tasty foods.
In 2014, one of Grafton's cheeses, the Spring Brook milk Cheese, won a big award. It received the "Best USA Cheese trophy" at the 2014 International Cheese Awards. This shows how good their cheese is!
