History of the GAR Hall

Building a Place for Veterans

This important hall was built in 1892. It was created by members of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR). The GAR was a group for soldiers who fought for the Union Army during the Civil War. They built this hall to remember their service and their fallen comrades.

A Meeting Spot for Soldiers

The Grand Army of the Republic Hall was the meeting place for a local group called Phil Sheridan GAR Post No. 4. This "Post" was like a local club or chapter. It was named after a famous Union General, Philip Sheridan. There were 32 such GAR halls across Idaho.

A Recognized Historic Site

On January 21, 1974, the Grand Army of the Republic Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it is officially recognized as a building important to the history of the United States.

The Hall Today

Today, the building is still in use. It is located right across the street from the Idaho State Capitol building. The University of Idaho now uses the hall for its administration offices.
