Grand Mound's History
Grand Mound began to grow around 1858. This was when the Chicago, Iowa and Nebraska Railroad built its tracks through the area. A train station was also built, which helped the town develop.
The city was officially planned, or "platted," in 1866. It was supposed to be named after a nearby place called Sand Mound. However, there was a mistake when recording the name. It was written as "Grand Mound" instead, and the name stuck! Some people say it was called Grand Mound because it was the "grandest" of all the mounds.
Education in Grand Mound
Grand Mound is part of the Central DeWitt Community School District. This school district is based in a nearby town called DeWitt. Before 2014, it was known as the Central Clinton Community School District.
For many years, younger students in Grand Mound went to Grand Mound Elementary School. Older students would travel by bus to DeWitt for school. The first school building in Grand Mound was built in 1917. Another building was added in 1954, which had a cafeteria and a gym.
In 2001, Grand Mound Elementary School closed. This was due to fewer students and concerns about the school building. After it closed, students from Grand Mound started going to elementary schools in Welton and DeWitt. Today, all elementary students from Grand Mound attend school in DeWitt.
Before the current school district was formed, Grand Mound had its own junior-senior high school. Its sports teams were called the Cardinals. The last class graduated in 1961. After that, Grand Mound, Welton, and DeWitt schools joined together. They formed the Central Community School District.
