The Story of Grandiosa
The first Grandiosa pizza was made on February 11, 1980. It was one of the very first frozen pizzas ever sold in Norway. The company that made it, Nora Industrier (now called Stabburet), started production in a town called Stranda.
Right away, Grandiosa became a huge hit. Even with many other pizza brands available today, it is still the number one best-selling frozen pizza in Norway. To keep things fresh, the company has created new versions and used fun marketing to keep people interested.
Besides Norway, Grandiosa is also sold in nearby countries like Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Poland. However, the toppings you find in those countries can be very different from the ones in Norway.
A Love-Hate Relationship
Norwegians have strong feelings about Grandiosa. Some people jokingly call it the "modern national dish" because it's so common. Others have funny nicknames for it, like "a piece of cardboard" or "laziness in a box." This shows how the pizza is both loved and made fun of in modern Norwegian culture.
In 2005, a book called Grandiosaland was published. It was filled with funny stories from people about their experiences with the pizza. The book also talked about favorite Norwegian activities, such as:
- Hyttetur: Trips to cozy cabins, often near the sea or in the mountains.
- 'Russ: A big celebration for high school students when they graduate.
- Dugnad: A tradition where people in a community volunteer to work together on projects.
A Popular Pizza Brand
Stabburet, the company that makes Grandiosa, has used clever ways to advertise. In 2004, they let people vote for a new pizza topping using text messages, which was very popular.
In 2006, they released a song called "Respekt for Grandiosa" (Respect for Grandiosa) as a mobile ring tone. It was a massive success, becoming the number one song in Norway for eight weeks.
Over 260 million Grandiosa pizzas have been sold since it was created. Each year, about 24 million pizzas are made for the people of Norway.
Different Kinds of Grandiosa
Besides the original, there are many other types of Grandiosa pizza. Here are some of them:
