Granite Shoals is a city located in Burnet County, Texas, in the United States. In 2020, about 5,129 people lived there. It's known as the "City of Parks" and is a great place to visit Lake Lyndon B. Johnson.

Where is Granite Shoals?

Granite Shoals is in the southwestern part of Burnet County. It is about 7 miles (11 km) west of Marble Falls. The city is also about 56 miles (90 km) northwest of downtown Austin. You can find it on the east side of Lake Lyndon B. Johnson.

The United States Census Bureau says the city covers a total area of about 6.9 square miles (17.9 km²). Most of this area, about 5.8 square miles (14.9 km²), is land. The rest, about 1.1 square miles (2.9 km²), is water.

A Look at History

Granite Shoals became an official city in 1966. People living in the area voted to make it a city. The city started from parts of the Sherwood Shores subdivision. This was once the largest planned community in Texas. The Sherwood Shores areas were created in 1962 from old ranches.

In 2005, residents voted to adopt a home rule charter. This is like a special set of rules for how the city will be governed. In 2006, the city hired its first city manager, John W. Gayle. A city manager helps run the city's daily operations.

What Granite Shoals is Known For

One important industry in Granite Shoals is granite mining. The city is also very popular with people who love lakes. It has 18 city parks, and 14 of them are right on Lake Lyndon B. Johnson.

The city's main complex has Quarry Park. This park offers many sports facilities. It has two covered tennis courts and a baseball field. There are also batting cages and a covered sports complex. This complex can be used for basketball, soccer, and pickleball.

In 2011, the city received money to build the Leonel Manzano Hike, Bike and Run Trails. These trails are at the municipal complex. They include a 2-mile (3.2 km) trail and a shorter 0.5-mile (0.8 km) trail. Leonel Manzano, a famous runner, grew up in Granite Shoals. The city is growing, with new stores opening up.

Schools in Granite Shoals

Students living in Granite Shoals go to schools in the Marble Falls Independent School District. Younger students attend Highland Lakes Elementary School, which is in Granite Shoals. Middle school and high school students travel about six miles (9.7 km) to Marble Falls for school.
