Sir Robert Grant Hammond (born 14 May 1944, died 31 May 2019) was a very important legal expert from New Zealand. He was a judge in the New Zealand Court of Appeal, which is a high court. He also led the New Zealand Law Commission, which helps make laws better. Sir Grant wrote many books about law and was known as a top expert in improving laws across many countries.

Early Life and School

Sir Grant Hammond was born in Waipawa, New Zealand, on 14 May 1944. He grew up on a dairy farm near Te Awamutu. He went to Te Awamutu College and was the head boy there in 1962. In 1962 and 1963, he was an exchange student in the United States. He studied at Wethersfield High School in Illinois.

Becoming a Legal Expert

Before he became a judge, Sir Grant was a partner at a New Zealand law firm called Tompkins Wake & Co. He was quite young when he achieved this. He also taught law at many universities in America, Canada, and New Zealand. He even led a group in Canada that worked to improve laws. He also directed a law research institute in Canada.

Judge and Leader

In 1992, Sir Grant became a judge in the High Court of New Zealand. Later, in 2004, he became a judge in the Court of Appeal of New Zealand. He worked as an appeals judge for almost ten years. During this time, he handled many important cases.

In 2010, he also became a judge of the Supreme Court of Samoa. In the same year, he started leading the New Zealand Law Commission. This group gives advice to the New Zealand Parliament about new laws.

Special Honours

In 2011, Sir Grant was given a special honour by the Queen. He was made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his great work in law. He also received other honours, including a fellowship at Oxford University. In 2014, he was named a Distinguished Fellow at Victoria University of Wellington.

Learning and Teaching Law

Sir Grant studied law at the University of Auckland, where he earned two degrees. He also got a Master of Laws degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the United States. Later, he earned a Doctorate of Laws from the University of Waikato.

He spent much of his early career teaching law in North America. In 1989, he came back to New Zealand. He became a law professor at the University of Auckland and later became the Dean of Law there. He also taught and was the Dean of Law at the University of Waikato.

While leading the New Zealand Law Commission, Sir Grant helped finish many important reports. These reports suggested ways to improve different laws in New Zealand.
