Grant McBride's Political Journey
Grant McBride first tried to become the representative for The Entrance in the 1991 state election. He was chosen by the Australian Labor Party to run for the seat. He lost that election by a very small number of votes.
However, because of changes to the voting areas, many people received the wrong ballot papers. This led to a special re-election, called a by-election, in 1992. Grant McBride won this by-election and became the Member of Parliament for The Entrance.
Serving as a Minister
In 2003, Grant McBride was given an important job as a Minister. He became the Minister for Gaming and Racing. This role meant he was in charge of laws and rules about gambling and racing activities.
In 2005, he also became the Minister for the Central Coast. In this role, he worked on issues important to the Central Coast region. He held both these Minister positions until 2007.
Changes in Ministerial Roles
In 2006, there were questions about a trip Grant McBride took overseas in 2005. Media reports suggested that the trip was very expensive. Following this, in April 2007, Grant McBride left his roles as Minister for Gaming and Racing and Minister for the Central Coast.
In May 2007, he was appointed Assistant Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly. The Speaker is like the referee in parliament, making sure debates follow the rules. An Assistant Speaker helps the Speaker with these duties.
On 8 November 2010, Grant McBride announced that he would not run for election again in the 2011 state election. This meant he would retire from parliament.
About Grant McBride's Life
Before becoming a politician, Grant McBride was a trained engineer. He also worked for a former prime minister of Australia, Gough Whitlam, as an electorate officer. An electorate officer helps the prime minister with tasks related to their local area and its voters.
Grant McBride lived in The Entrance with his wife and their eight children. One of his daughters, Emma McBride, has also become a politician. She is currently a federal Member of Parliament for the area called Division of Dobell.
Grant McBride passed away on 12 February 2018, at the age of 68. He died from Alzheimer's disease.
