Granville railway station is an important train station in Sydney, Australia. It is located in the suburb of Granville. This station is a key meeting point for several train lines.
It serves the Sydney Trains T1 Western Line and T2 Inner West & Leppington Line services. Granville is also where the Main Western line and the Main South line connect.

Station History
Granville station first opened on July 2, 1860. Back then, it was called Parramatta Junction. It was very close to where the first railway line in New South Wales ended. That first line was finished in 1855.
On September 1, 1880, the station moved to its current spot. It was also renamed Granville at that time.
Granville Junction
Just west of the station is Granville Junction. This is where the Main Western and the original Main South train lines meet. The old Main South line is now sometimes called the Old Main South. This is because a newer bypass line was built between Lidcombe and Cabramatta.
Station Changes Over Time
In the 1950s, Granville station was rebuilt. This happened as part of a project to add more tracks to the Main Suburban line from Lidcombe. Adding more tracks helps more trains run at the same time.
On January 18, 1977, a very sad event happened near the station. This was the Granville railway disaster, Australia's worst train accident. It occurred about 200 meters west of the station. A memorial plaque at the station remembers the 83 people who lost their lives.
A special area for parcels and a side track used to be on the northern side of the station. These were removed in August 1990.
Granville has always been a place where people change trains. However, a new 'Y-link' track was built in 1996. This track connects Harris Park and Merrylands stations. It allows trains to travel directly between the Main Western and Main South lines. This new link is part of the Cumberland Line.
