The Inner West & Leppington Line, known as T2, is a train service in Sydney, Australia. It is light blue on train maps. This line helps people travel around the inner west and south-western parts of Sydney.

The T2 line has 37 stops. It starts from the City Circle in the city centre. Then, it goes west to Granville. From Granville, the line splits. Some trains go northwest to Parramatta, while others go south to Leppington. Sometimes, trains also end at Homebush. The T2 line started running on 26 November 2017. It replaced an older line called the T2 Airport, Inner West & South Line.

History of the T2 Line

After the 2011 state election, the government wanted to make transport in New South Wales better. They created a new group called Transport for NSW in November 2011. Later, in July 2013, Sydney Trains took over running the Sydney train network from CityRail.

Changes to Train Services

Transport for NSW made a new train timetable and changed how the lines were named. This started on 20 October 2013. Three older CityRail lines were combined to form the Airport, Inner West & South Line. This new line was given the number T2.

The 2013 timetable was designed to use new improvements to the train network. These improvements were part of the Rail Clearways Program. This program, started in 2004, aimed to add more tracks and turning points. This helped trains move more smoothly and avoid delays. By 2013, most of these improvements were finished. Also, many new Waratah trains were ready to be used.

Before 2013, some train lines ran in loops or connected in different ways. The new timetable changed this. For example, some loop services were stopped. These changes were made possible by new turning points at Homebush and Lidcombe. However, some people found it harder to travel because they had to change trains more often.

On 13 December 2015, the T2 South Line added a new branch to Leppington. This replaced a temporary train service to Liverpool.

The Current T2 Line

A new Sydney Trains timetable began on 26 November 2017. The old T2 line was split into two separate lines. The new T2 line now runs from Leppington to the city via Granville. It also has a branch that goes to Parramatta.

A new line, the T8 Airport and South Line, was also created. It runs from Macarthur to the city. The new T2 line was given a light blue colour on maps. The T8 line kept the green colour from the old T2 line.

The T5 Cumberland Line also changed. Its trains no longer go to Campbelltown. Instead, they start and end at Leppington. This means that the area between Glenfield and Macarthur is now only served by trains that use the East Hills railway line.

Future Plans for the T2 Line

In 2020, Transport for NSW started planning for train services west of Bankstown. They are looking at bringing back a service from Liverpool to the City via Regents Park. Transport for NSW has confirmed that from mid-2024 to 2030, the old Inner West Line between Lidcombe and Liverpool will be renamed. It will become the T3 Liverpool & Inner West Line and will run directly to the City Circle via Regents Park. This new T3 line will run in addition to the current T2 services from Leppington to the City Circle via Granville.

T2 Train Route

Trains on the Inner West & Leppington Line usually start by going around the City Circle. They then use the Main Suburban railway line. At Homebush, some trains that follow the "inner west" route finish their journey.

Trains that continue further west towards Parramatta or Leppington join different tracks. At Granville, trains can either go a short distance on the Main Western line to Parramatta. Or, they can take the Old Main South railway line to a junction near Cabramatta. From there, they continue on the Main South railway line to Glenfield. South of Glenfield, trains switch to the South West Rail Link to reach the end station at Leppington.

The T2 Inner West & Leppington Line trains stop at these stations:

  • Museum, St James, Circular Quay, Wynyard, Town Hall and Central on the City Circle.
  • Redfern, Macdonaldtown, Newtown, Stanmore, Petersham, Lewisham, Summer Hill, Ashfield, Croydon, Burwood, Strathfield, Homebush, Flemington, Lidcombe, Auburn and Granville on the Main Suburban line.
  • Harris Park and Parramatta on the Main Western line.
  • Merrylands, Guildford, Yennora, Fairfield, Canley Vale, Cabramatta, Warwick Farm, Liverpool, Casula and Glenfield on the Old Main South and Main South lines.
  • Edmondson Park and Leppington on the South West Rail Link.

Train Services

The T2 line usually has two main ways trains stop at stations. The first type of service goes to Leppington. These trains make fewer stops between Redfern and Homebush, depending on the time of day. West of Homebush, all trains stop at every station, except for Clyde on weekends.

The second type of service stops at all stations between Redfern and Homebush. Many of these weekday trains continue to Parramatta, stopping at all stations there too. Both types of services run about 4 trains per hour during less busy times. More trains run during peak hours (when many people travel for work or school). Also, there are faster "express" trains between Ashfield and the city during the morning peak.<mapframe width="650" height="400" longitude="151.002" latitude="-33.8884" zoom="11" align="left" text="T2 interactive map"> [ { "type": "ExternalData", "service": "page", "title": "T2 Sydney.map" }, { "type": "ExternalData", "service": "page", "title": "Museum, St James & Circular Quay railway station markers.map" }, { "type": "ExternalData", "service": "page", "title": "Wynyard railway station marker.map" }, { "type": "ExternalData", "service": "page", "title": "Town Hall railway station marker.map" }, { "type": "ExternalData", "service": "page", "title": "Central railway station (suburban) marker.map" }, { "type": "ExternalData", "service": "page", "title": "Redfern railway station marker.map" }, { "type": "ExternalData", "service": "page", "title": "Macdonaldtown to Croydon railway station markers.map" }, { "type": "ExternalData", "service": "page", "title": "Burwood & Strathfield railway station markers.map" }, { "type": "ExternalData", "service": "page", "title": "Homebush & Flemington railway station markers.map" }, { "type": "ExternalData", "service": "page", "title": "Lidcombe, Auburn & Granville railway station markers.map" }, { "type": "ExternalData", "service": "page", "title": "Clyde railway station marker.map" }, { "type": "ExternalData", "service": "page", "title": "Harris Park & Parramatta railway station markers.map" }, { "type": "ExternalData", "service": "page", "title": "Merrylands to Canley Vale railway station markers.map" }, { "type": "ExternalData", "service": "page", "title": "Cabramatta to Liverpool railway station markers.map" }, { "type": "ExternalData", "service": "page", "title": "Casula railway station marker.map" }, { "type": "ExternalData", "service": "page", "title": "Glenfield railway station marker.map" }, { "type": "ExternalData", "service": "page", "title": "Edmondson Park & Leppington railway station markers.map" } ] </mapframe>
