Gravel Switch is a small, quiet community in Marion County, Kentucky, in the United States. It's known as an unincorporated community. This means it's not a big city with its own local government, like a mayor or city council. Instead, it's a collection of homes and businesses that share a name and a history.

About Gravel Switch

Gravel Switch is located in the state of Kentucky. It sits along Kentucky Route 243. You can find it just south of where Route 243 meets U.S. Route 68. It's southwest of a town called Perryville and northeast of Bradfordsville.

What's in the Name?

The name "Gravel Switch" has an interesting story. A post office was set up in this community way back in 1870. The area was named because there was a very valuable deposit of gravel nearby. A local railroad, the Louisville and Nashville Railroad Lebanon Branch, even built a special railway track, or "switch," to reach this gravel. That's how the community got its unique name!

A Special Store

Gravel Switch is home to a very old and special place called Penn's Store. This store is famous because it's the oldest general store in all of Kentucky! A general store used to be a place where people could buy almost anything they needed, from food to tools to clothes. Penn's Store has been around for a long time, making it a cool piece of history in the community.
