The city of Grayson wasn't always called Grayson. Its first name was Trip!
In 1901, a local leader named John Ellery Jacobs, who was also the postmaster, wanted to change the city's name. He asked the post office if they could change Trip, Georgia, to Berkley, Georgia.
On December 6, 1901, the state of Georgia officially agreed to make Trip a town and change its name. However, soon after, Mr. Jacobs found out there was already a Berkley, Georgia.
He then suggested the name Graymount because you could see Stone Mountain clearly from the area. But that name was also already taken! Finally, he suggested the name Grayson, Georgia, and that's the name that stuck.
