History of Great Neck Plaza
The Village of Great Neck Plaza officially became a village on May 3, 1930.
In 1866, a railroad line was extended to Great Neck. This changed the area from a farming community into a place where people lived and traveled to work in the city. The railroad made it easy for people to commute.
For many years in the late 1800s, Great Neck was the end of the train line that is now called the Port Washington Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. Even as the train station was being rebuilt, the village was officially formed in 1930.
Besides the train station, Great Neck Plaza has other important old buildings. These include the local post office and the Grace and Thomaston Buildings.
Great Neck Plaza is a busy place with many shops and businesses. It also has two parks and places where people live, like apartment buildings and private homes. Even though the village is small, covering only about one-third of a square mile, it has a lively downtown area. This area includes the Great Neck LIRR station, over 250 stores, many apartment buildings, and several office buildings. There are also hotels and facilities for seniors.
Geography of Great Neck Plaza
